Headquarters activities

President's diary
The BVA President's activities in the week ending November 19 included:

Policy matters
Last week was particularly busy on the parliamentary front, with the Conservative peer and BVA Honorary Associate Baroness Byford having initiated three debates on matters of concern to the profession - avian influenza, the Supply of Relevant Veterinary Medicinal Products Order 2005 and the use of lay testers for bovine tuberculosis (TB) testing.

The BVA provided briefings for all three debates to a cross-section of its parliamentary Honorary Associates, as well as other interested peers.

Transcripts of the full debates can be accessed via the `Parliamentary News' link in the Advice Centre of the membersonly section of the BVA's website, at www.bva.co.uk/members/advice. Summaries of the debates are available in the Policy Diary, at www.bva.co.uk/policy/lobbying/policy_diary.asp

Media inquiries
Media inquiries dealt with by the BVA during the week ending November 19 concerned a number of matters including avian influenza and the deaths of birds in quarantine, bovine TB, the risk of foot-and-mouth disease being imported from Brazil, charging for veterinary prescriptions, the business side of veterinary practice, and the effects of passive smoking on pets.
