Horse Trust commits £1 million to research
THE Horse Trust has committed over £1 million to equine research and
clinical scholarships in its latest round of scientific research grants. The
veterinary schools at Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool and London have
all received funding, as have the Animal Health Trust (AHT) and the
Institute of Orthopaedics at University College London (UCL).
Five clinical scholarships have been created at the five veterinary
schools, each through the award of £80,000 funding. Scientific research
grants have been awarded as follows:
- £136,285 to the University of Liverpool for a study of mucin gene
expression in the equine respiratory tract in response to disease-relevant
mediators;
- £89,873 to the AHT for phase 1 of a nationwide system for
surveillance of equine grass sickness;
- £182,056 to the Royal Veterinary College for a study of the
downregulation of neutrophil accumulation in equine inflammatory disease;
- £131,560 to the University of Liverpool for a study of equine
geriatric health and welfare in the UK;
- £145,422 to the Institute of Orthopaedics at UCL for a
study of age-related changes to matrix turnover in functionally distinct
equine tendons - an important determinant of susceptibility to tendonitis in
horses.
The Horse Trust is currently inviting applications for its 2008 welfare
grants for non-invasive research into equine diseases and postgraduate
scholarships. Further information about all grants and scholarships is
