New members for the FAWC
FOUR new members have been appointed to the Farm Animal Welfare Council
(FAWC).
The new members are: Dr Michael Appleby, welfare policy adviser for the
World Society for the Protection of Animals and a member of the Scientific
Committee of Humane Farm Animal Care in the USA, who was previously
a lecturer on applied animal behaviour at the University of Edinburgh; Mr Gwyn
Jones, who is currently the National Farmers' Union (NFU) national
dairy board chairman and a member of the NFU's policy and
governance boards; Mr Stuart Shearlow, who works for the State Veterinary
Service in Galashields in the Scottish Borders; and Mr Steve Tait, head of
sales and marketing for the farm assurance scheme Freedom Food.
The appointments took effect on January 1, and will last for a three-year
period, which can then be renewed.
