New members for the FAWC

FOUR new members have been appointed to the Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC).

The new members are: Dr Michael Appleby, welfare policy adviser for the World Society for the Protection of Animals and a member of the Scientific Committee of Humane Farm Animal Care in the USA, who was previously a lecturer on applied animal behaviour at the University of Edinburgh; Mr Gwyn Jones, who is currently the National Farmers' Union (NFU) national dairy board chairman and a member of the NFU's policy and governance boards; Mr Stuart Shearlow, who works for the State Veterinary Service in Galashields in the Scottish Borders; and Mr Steve Tait, head of sales and marketing for the farm assurance scheme Freedom Food.

The appointments took effect on January 1, and will last for a three-year period, which can then be renewed.
