Headquarters activities

President's diary
The BVA President's activities during January included:

Current consultations
Tuberculosis (England) Order 2006 DEFRA has invited comments on proposed amendments to the Tuberculosis (England) Order 2006, in relation to the provision for exempt markets and the isolation of traced cattle from breakdown herds.

Exempt markets are defined within the current Order as markets specifically for the sale of animals from one- or two-yearly tested herds that have not been premovement-tested when normally they should have been. Onward movement from exempt markets is restricted to one of the following four options: direct to slaughter, back to the premises of origin, to an approved finishing unit or to an exempt finishing unit.

DEFRA notes that since the introduction of premovement testing in 2006, exempt markets have generally been operating smoothly. However, it says, some parts of the industry are calling for greater flexibility in the operation of these markets.

DEFRA is seeking views on the various options for changing the exempt market rules, as outlined in the consultation document (available at www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/tb-order/letter.htm). It also seeks comments on the new draft Tuberculosis (England) Order 2007, the revised draft exempt market and finishing unit conditions, and proposals to enhance the powers of the State Veterinary Service to issue isolation notices on traced cattle from breakdown herds.

Members who wish to contribute to the BVA's response are asked to send their contributions to the Association by February 9.

bullet Members who wish to view all the consultationswith which the BVA is currently involved, or to submit a response, should visit the BVA's policy web pages at www.bva.co.uk/members/consultations/index.asp
