SIR, - Sarah Burns's letter (VR, January 13, 2007, vol 160, p 64) implies that the teaching of communication skills is either absent or virtually non-existent in UK veterinary schools.
Not so! The NUVACS (National Unit for the Advancement of Veterinary Communication Skills) project has been running since 2002/03, and has ensured a presence and continued support for communication skills training at all veterinary schools in the UK (Gray and others 2006).
Although, as a proportion of the curriculum, the teaching of this subject does not take up as much time as in the medical equivalent, the profile of veterinary communication skills has never been higher, and enthusiastic and dedicated members of staff at each of the UK schools (and Dublin) attend two meetings each year to share knowledge, ideas and resources. All schools utilise educational actors to recreate difficult scenarios that may be encountered in practice, allowing students to learn from the experience of actually dealing with simulated clients, reflecting on their own skills and receiving feedback from others.
Further information on the project in the UK is available on the NUVACS's website (www.nuvacs.co.uk).
