SIR, - I agree with many of the comments made by Sarah Burns in her letter (VR, January 13, 2007, vol 160, p 64). Consultation skills and the reflective learning that is required to develop them has been the subject of my MSc thesis and currently my DProf thesis at Middlesex University. I am pleased that the new RCVS postgraduate modular Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice contains compulsory consultation skills, recognising the importance of this subject. The Society of Practising Veterinary Surgeons has run two roadshows on consultation skills since January 2006, and is running another one-day roadshow in Stirling on February 22, 2007.
In a book review in the same issue (VR, January 13, 2007, vol 160, pp 61-62), Kirsten Schuler questions the relevance of a chapter on owner communication to a text on feline medicine. In my view, the importance the profession places on consultation skills and communication is likely to have a highly significant bearing on its future.
